When you think of a startup you think Silicon Valley, but theres many other locations and other factors that are the key to any startup. I recently posted on how New York is becoming the next Silicon Valley. New York offers many opportunities and combines the wealth of Wall Street with the boom of technology. This post also received some feedback from east coast blogging discuss how Boston is becoming the next Silicon Valley.
This morning I was reading a blog post on Paul Dix’s Blog about Coworking in NYC. If you haven’t heard of Coworking, its a movement to create a community of cafe-like collaboration spaces for developers, writers and independents. Pauls discussed a bit about his coworking experience and has some video of Noel Hidalgo explaining coworking.
This term coworking describes what I would refer to as the key to any startup, where the location and the environment create the startup. Most bloggers, dotcomers, or programmers seem to enjoy working in an open environment with a fast internet connection and smart people surrounding yourself. I know looking back at my position with the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Vermont, this was a perfect example of coworking.
The Center for Teaching and Learning is located in a open space room on the 3rd floor of the library. This room is equipped with easy to move tables, chairs, unlimited Green Mountain Coffee (Rain Forest Nut is AMAZING!), and a fast interent 2 university connection.
So when your creating your startup look at surrounding yourself with smart people and coworking, the location is just where you file your taxes.
