This past week I was reading about how America has dropped to seventh among impact of technology in development nations. Denmark is the new leader in technology innovation. This was only a matter of time before this happen. It just makes me think of all the things that went wrong.
Technology is driven by knowledge and funding. If we cut funding on research grants and schools, we kill our technology. Our “Fearless” leader Bush wanted to have broadband access to every American, but spent more time fighting a war. To think there are people and places in the US that you can not even get a high speed connection, and most of these places are not where you would think.
Spending the last 4 years in Vermont, I saw a change in Burlington Vermont with Burlington Telecom a ISP for the town. Burlington Telecom offers high speed internet, broadband, and phone (triple play) for $99/month! The high speed internet is transmitted via fiber. I did not use this service because my area was not covered until I moved, but I did get to test the speeds at a friends house and was pretty impressed. The “large” city (Pop: 38,889) of Burlington built their own ISP that offered a service cheaper and more reliable then Adelphia (now comcast) the ISP in the Area. We need towns and cities to stand up for themselves and say help us or we will compete against you. Our location is ruled and controlled by monopolies!
I have recently switched from Comcast to FIOS and must say, WOW what a differents! Speed, reliability, etc although I have had some TV issues with blocks and programing, but a LOT better then comcast.
In 1996 the town I grew up in started to offer cable modems. Since then I have always had broadband and wanted faster speeds, being a technosexualy that I am. Once cable modems caught on, Comcast did not have to worry about people leaving their servcie, no matter the Comcast had no competition and just added more people to the connection. We need to stand up to these monopoilies and FIGHT BACK!
America is missing out on technology because of Harvard MBA’s looking at nickel and diming customers to death! There was a recent article in the consumerist about how text messaging is marked up 7314%!!! We need our fast internet and new technologies for cell phones. America we need to fight back and get back to our #1 position!
So Americans get up and get out and call up your congress man setup blogs and get the word out that we need to invest in technology and get America back to a learner and not a follower!
