Well 2.25 terabytes after raid 5, but whos counting. I just ordered a Infrant ReadyNAS NV+ and 4 Seagate 750 GB SATA drives to build my Network Area Storage (NAS). I have a lot of data from web development, video, pictures, etc. I have been trying to store/backup all my data to 1 computer but have been filling hard drive after hard drive. I finally decided to take the jump and get a large network attach storage.
I setup/installed a Infrant Ready NAS NV for data backup at a doctors office. It was great, web interface, simple to replace drives and simple enough a doctor could use it.
I have been meaning to buy one, but the price tag at Amazon or the retailers was rough, but I managed to find the ReadyNAS NV+ with 1GB Ram for $739 and 4 750GB drives for $248/each a total of about $1731 (taxes, shipping on just ReadyNAS NV+)
Now I have been looking at these for a while now, I was even at digital life talking to Infrant about their products. I thought they were in the right market, they just need a product that should be braned and explain to the consumer what it is so the average Joe understands and not something that only a geek would use like a NAS. While at digital life, they showed off their Ready NAS NV+. The main difference was the small lcd display that showed the IP address as well as a couple of other diagnostic lights. I am surprised these boxes are not flying off the shelves. Data is becoming very important and a easy way to backup data can be hard. Infrant did a great job building a web interface and marketing it towards all platforms; windows, linux, and mac.
I just got it today and still am setting up the 3TB. I am hoping to see some itunes/iphoto integration seemless with the ReadyNAS NV+. I was hoping Apple would take the jump and see that home users want a NAS that stores the families pictures, music, files, etc. Building a iserver that has intergration with iLife and soon timemachine.
There was an article posted a while back talking about this concept. The image in the article almost looks like the ReadyNAS NV+ just without the dvd drive. Its funny I was also thinking about picking up a Mac mini to act as the main computer for all my multimedia stuff while using the ReadyNAS as the storage. If you combine them I guess you get the Apple Home Server, but without the nice white box.
I will be posting up some reviews of the ReadyNAS NV+ next week after I have used it a bit. It’s still syncing the 4th drive, I hope I did not get a 750GB DOA drive.
