For those you have a gmail account you know what I am talking about and for the others who think, WTF? r u serious? You can leave! (j/k, comment below if you hate gmail).
Anyway, I am gmail addict and enough all the features that only a geek guru could enjoy. Last fall I was receiving about 150 to 300 emails a day between the 10+ email accounts that I was using for work, school, life, etc. I was tired of dealing with mail on OS X or thunderbird. I wanted something new, but have the ability to see all my email from a webmail client. I had a gmail account and started to read about all the little tricks and tips you can do with gmail. For one, you can have gmail pull a imap or pop3 account as well as use gmail as a email mail proxy and send out email with your email@domain.com. After reading this I forwarded all my mail to Gmail and setup all the accounts. It was great, I could check just my gmail account and check all my other 10+_email accounts at the same time. I also had the abilty to quickly write emails using johnmurch.com domains and nomadthinking.com domains. It’s also great, because I can use one email/domain for receiving emails and another one for sending, great to keep spam down and organize where email is coming from. I know most people might be thinking, yea mail and thunderbird can do that, yea but a lot of the time I am on a different computer, and I am not gonna go through the hassle of setting up either of those email applications again!
Gmail is great because I can always check my email as well as use the nifty gmail notifier to easily alert me that I have new mail. I also enjoy the dynamic labeling on the fly. For example, say your at jcrew and they ask for your email address to sent you “coupons”, you can create username+jcrew@gmail.com. Then when you get home, you can create a label and assign the email address above to auto label with J. Crew. This also is a great way to track spam and which companies give out your email. For example, if you start getting penis enlarger emails with username+jcrew@gmail.com you know who gave out ur email! Another plus for using gmail for all your email, is you have a nice search engine built into gmail, Thanks Google! Searching for that obscure email or filtering it by email is extremely easy and fast!
Now there are some drawbacks with using a online email client. I know Firefox 3 is working on some offline capabilities and I know gmail wants to start allowing offline creating of emails while on the go and then send when you get connected back to the internet. This is not a big deal for myself, because if I have my laptop with my I prolly have an internet connection, or I just write it in notepad/textmate/insert your fav txt editor here and just copy/paste into gmail when I get back online.
So my question for the people still reading this, is what/how do you use gmail? I want to know what geek guru like tips/tricks you can give to the rest of us?
