Being a Geek Guru for Nomad Thinking is basically me, on the go! I have been traveling a lot and have been seeing a lot of places that I have been to and others I have not. One week I was in Boston for 2 different reasons on 3 different days!? Traveling is just part of a nomad thinking!
Working on the go has made me think a lot about middle America and people in general. I have seen some of the riches/poorest places in Up Up state New York in Ogdensburg as well as New York City. It makes me wonder what people are doing and actually do for a living as well as if they enjoy living their lives that way. The readers of my blog come from all over the world, at least thats what Google Analytics says. My life has changed a lot in this past year after graduation. I have been up and around Europe, New York City, Arizona, California, and most of New England. I was back in Burlington Vermont where I graduated a little over a year ago, and it just hit me. How much I have changed between how much I read, learn, and communicate. I normally try and average at least 1 book a week, if not more. I have also enjoyed the variety of bloggers/people I meet either online or at networking meetup. It has been very interesting to see where I am and who I meet. This blog has been a real eye opener for myself and HOPEFULLY for the people who read it. I have tried to push more of my thoughts and reading on Hippy Green, but I feel like I need to start a book club of my own, posting books coders/technowhores/Geek Guru’s should read!
Recently I have gone back reading a lot of the computer books or recommended reading of some of my computer classes. Working with Ruby on Rails and web programming has really changed me from where I was at just a year ago. In the past I have focused on hardware and more of an admin server management role rather then a coder. But being a Geek Guru brings me back to my roots, coding.
Anyway, I will be posting up a list of books that I have read as well as MUST READS for any wanna be geek. The first book that you should pickup if you already haven’t is Dreaming in Code, a great overview of the software development track for a new web x.0 application. This is more for the younger crowd who wants to take a top down approach rather then get into specific detail of extreme programming or agile development. It discusses some of the software development options as well as walks through the story of Chandler. Please let me know what you think of the book when your done, or post a comment now if you have read it.
