Since I have been reading a lot (almost a new book a week!) I decided to build a Geek Guru Book Club. Hey if Oprah can do it, so can I! I have only started to post my most recent reads and hope you have either enjoyed reading them or check them out if you haven’t. I will be making this a monthly post keeping you up to date on what I am reading along with any suggestions you may have. If you have a suggest of a book, please contact me.
The Soul of a New Machine - Tracy Kidder is a great book, it was suggest by my dad. Its a bit old, but a great book on hearing about the whiz kids of the early computers, I am talking about the VAX. Yea that old, anyway great book about the company Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC).
The Google Story - for the entrepreneur in you, go read this. Its a great book that discusses how Google started as well as a lot of the untold stories that you may not have heard. If you enjoyed this book, you should also check out The Search, its a great follow up or more detailed book that gives you a bit more of an overview of what was happing with the search engines in the 90s.
Wikinomics, this is a MUST READ if you have used the word crowdsourcing or prosumer. I loved this book and hope this is just the beginning of the revolution. There are so many great points and its a quick read.
Freakonomics is another great economic book but touches more on short stories that make you think about the world around you. This is more geared towards the “lets save the planet” within you. I also suggest the followup of reading this book to check out their blog. Also check out one of my favorite post, If Crack Dealers Took Lessons from Walgreeens, They Really Would Be Rich.
The Mythical Man-Month - if you are a coder and haven’t read or heard of this book, STOP CODING! This is the ONE BOOK that you NEED TO READ as any developer would tell you. I must admit I did not read this book cover to cover while it was assigned to me my senior year at UVM, but when I started to work, I was reading a new book every week. I picked this up and found it not only to be a great book about software development and project management, but this 26 year old book still has concepts that were used by IBM that are still VALID TODAY! You might even find it funny how they talk about $20,000 machines and a 4k Operating System!
The Art of the Start is a MUST READ for the entrepreneur inside of you. If you have never heard of Guy Kawasaki before, check out his blog. He has been posted on digg, del.icoi.us, and other sites in the past. His recent project truemors was created with a $12,107.09 budget! NO VC REQUIRED! This book was recommended by a friend, Josh who is running his new startup Syncromatics.
Dreaming in Code this book was mentioned yesterday, but I wanted to just add it to the list incase you missed my blog posting.
As I stated above, I will be continuing this Geek Guru Book Club and am always looking for suggestions. Reading or just finished a book that you think is a Geek Required Reading, please contact me.
