I had tmobile for almost a year and never got service, it drove me nuts! I have not looked into the details about tmobile wifi, but you can always use skype with your iphone if you have wifi. One thing though, is that I've had this for less than 24hrs and I did have to reboot once already because safari got stuck in the middle of loading a webpage( on my home wifi ).
