As I have posted before, I am the founder of Nomad Thining, LLC, a computer consulting company. The man reason I named it Nomad Thinking was because I feel like I am a nomad (traveling all the time) and because I am always thinking, ha!
Traveling is part of life in my mind. I have always want to travel to places I have never been to or sometimes I just want to travel to a place to … do [insert fun activity here]. For the past couple of weeks I have been commuting to Burlington, Vermont (thats Vermon, no T) to work for mophie. Anyway, I have gotten the luxury of being examined by TSA as well as enjoy MANY DELAYS or CANCELLATION in flying, oh the excitement. I have only started to understand this travel life and realize how to maximize time while flying as well as see various parts of middle America.
While traveling I have found it necessary to carry a book on you at all times, sometimes even 2 if it’s raining or expected to rain. I also recommend bring a laptop to at least read RSS feeds or websites, I always open up about 20 to 30 tabs (if not more) before I leave to the airport. This way if there is no free wifi (I know I should pickup a Verizon card for internet) or if there is no signal, you can at least check the web without a connection. Another great idea while traveling is know your flight attendants. I have found that Mr. Pibb is always served on my Continental flights to VT as well as saying its my favorite drink and asking can give you more then you might get. (Update: Mr. Pibb is now served on all Continental flights. The story behind all o this is that Continental had to get rid of one of their drinks, Dr. Pepper was the one chosen to get ride of. As soon as Dr. Pepper was drop, customers wanted something similar. So Continental stepped up to the plate and is now offering Mr. Pibb. GENIUS! Enjoy!)
One fun experiment I did while traveling was always asking for a CAN of _____(soda,water,etc). So ask for a CAN of Coke rather then Coke. Most flight attendants will give you the whole can while others will just give you a cup. I know this may sound a bit like a penny pincher, but flying can really change your view point and needs. For example, my flight back from London, England I was ONLY allowed to carry my passport and a boarding pass in a plastic bag. (Yes, I was flying back the day after the arresting of terrorist and their plot to blow up even more planes). While waiting for my baggage so I could get my cell phone and call for a ride, I found out someone got a book on the airplane, A BOOK! Yes some form of entertainment is a must for a 5 to 6 hour flight, but I was forced to just sit thinking great… I hope I do NOT run into any buildings while traveling, ugh!
Living the nomadic life also carries some nice rewards like enjoying in and out burger one day while having a nice talyor ham and cheese at a dinner the next day. (Inside Jersey joke) If you want to live a nomadic life, start rethinking your job and how you can offer your services and knowledge in a different way.
