I own a 2001 Prius (classic) and yes, mileage varies A LOT! Drive all freeway and 45-55mpg is common, drive the freeway at 50 and you may get 65mpg. Up mountain roads, get 15, down mountain roads get 99 . Still, My average before my new job (20 miles to & from work each day) was about 43. My average driving now, 6 miles to work (new job) is now 35. Still, I drive to work & home three days on a gallon, very economical.

In short, the mileage varies A LOT but if you drive the same way and style daily, over time it will be consistent within 2-3mpg. Change roads & also seasonal summer/winter and there can be an 8mpg difference. Get used to it.

By the way, the "B" position is for engine braking that turns the engine on full-time. It can be used at any speed (even at 90mph) as the car has a 'one speed' transmission. This means using the engine to brake while driving down a hill on mountain roads is very practical and OK to use. Shift to 'DRIVE' the rest of the time.

Hi, I just purchased a white 2007 Prius Package #2=#23,569. I received no credits as my wife & I have leased toyotas since 1988. Prius are so in demand that inour area there are no price cuts. One is on a waiting line to get one. I like the car very much. I have some questions about it though. One has to learn how to drive all over again. No jack rabbit starts, & no sustained driving over 70 MPH., if you want to get good milage. I have about 2,000 mile on ours. I have been getting 52.5,53.5,40.22,37,& the last fill up was 66.12. I have some concern about the consistancy of the milage. Have called the dealer about this. The best speed to get good milage is from 30 to 45 MPH. I haave learned that one must accelerate to 25 or 30 quite rapidly, then back off. This gives much better milage in the city. My wife has learned this in the past 2 weeks & this has helped a lot. When u drive 310 miles on 4.64 gal. that is fun. If u plan to be a hot rod driver don't buy a Prius. It will squeel the tires on pedal to the metal though. HA!!!
