I have always find it interesting what keywords or terms that I can put into Google to get my page as the number 1 search result. Previously I was able to score Geek Guru but have been up and up and down to result 2 and 4, but today I am back on top!
So for all those who have seen Brian Shaler’s business card or other’s like Matt Mullenweg, who started wordpress, his business card says open Google, type in Matt, click I am feeling lucky. I guess I can now start to market Geek Guru as a conversation starter. (or until Google decides I am not #1)
I also wanted to repost the SEO tips/tricks that was posted on the Wealth Creation Alliance, please be sure to join the Wealth Creation Alliance newsletter mailing list and if your in the Phoenix Area, stop by the Alpha Cashflow Club on Thursday nights.
Does your website draw attention?
How to get a higher rank on search engines
Author: John Murch, Web Entrepreneur
In today’s world of easy web access, you need to have a web presence to be seen as a legitimate contender. But what is the point of having a website if there is nobody looking at it? If you don’t want to waste those website dollars, than you need to read on and take advantage of some very simple steps to ensure that your site gains the attention it deserves.
The cheapest form of marketing is to have a high Search Engine Optimization (SEO). When building any website you want to make your site easily searchable by Google, Yahoo, Ask, or any other search engine. Now, I don’t want to dive into too much code or geek speak, but here is a short list of things you need to achieve this result.
Descriptive Page Titles
This is a description of the page and is displayed to the users on the top of their web browser. Use this to your advantage and make sure each page on your website has a unique page title. This is a simple and easy way to increase your page ranking.
Take it easy with excessive Images or Flash - Images won’t show up on a search engine unless you have alt tags within them, which add descriptions to your pictures. This includes clickable buttons that would serve as navigation (buttons are pictures of text that direct you within a website. ie, buttons that say “Home” or “Contanct Us”). A good method is to have a good balance between images and text, and to have descriptive content that describes the purpose of your site.
Meta Tags
These are keywords descriptions you put on each web page. This helps give context to your website as well as displays the description when your site is displayed on a search engine.
Bold
Be sure to use the bold tag keyword for keywords on your site. However, use just a couple per page as too many bolds may distract your viewers. You should also use h1 (h stands for “heading”) tags for titles and main content. Google pays a lot of attention to keywords within either bold, strong, h1, or h2 tags.
Deep Linking
Search engines give higher rankings if other sites have links to your pages. Ask other website administrators to put a link on their page to your site, and do the same for them if necessary. If you do this, be sure that they describe your website properly on their site.
Domain Name
Be sure to choose a domain name that is either the company’s name or something descriptive. Most search engines give higher ranking depending on the words in a domain. Keep in mind that if you are handing out a domain on a business card that takes 5 minutes to type it into a browser, it’s likely that people won’t go through the trouble.
Blog Marketing
People like to talk about anything, and many businesses are taking advantage of this by using social marketing (AKA: blogging). Find a blog that discusses your business and post a comment about it as well as a link back to your site. You can also find bloggers and ask them to talk about your website. How do you find them? Use www.technorati.com to search for your market, a region, and a blog related to it (IE. Pizza Scottsdale Arizona). Contact the person who runs that blog to strike up a relationship. If nothing is showing up in your market, search for your area and see what that turns up. If still nothing, maybe you should consider starting your own blog!
Sitemap
This might be a bit too advanced for some, but having a sitemap can greatly improve your SEO. This is a specific type of file that tells a search engine exactly what and where each of your web pages are on your website. If you’re interested, check out Google Webmaster Tools.
