Having a mentor is very important. Being an entrepreneur you need to have great mentors and most of them, you do NOT even need to have met. Mentors can help you think outside the box and see things that you may not know as well as inspire you to do something great. Some of my own mentors are Tim Ferris, Cameron Johnson, My Dad, Robert Kyiosaki, Donal Trump, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Richard Branson, and of course Dale Carnegie.
Cameron talks about mentors in his book, You Call the Shots. He discusses some of his mentors like Bill Gates, Michael Dell, and Steve Jobs.
Most of the mentors I listed above I have only met while at a conference or a pitch, while others I learn by hearing them on youtube or reading their books. You need a variety of mentors, to build up your support network.
For me, I have a couple of friends, who are my own mentors who are trying to make it big, Bob, Cory Michael Sanchez, Jovan Will, The Brian Shaler and many others. Most of the people you talk to on a regular basis are part of your team and mentors.
Finding mentors can be simple and helpful, you need to surround yourself with like minded people as well as others who challenge you on a consistent basis. Moving out here to Arizona I meet a lot of people I admire as well as started to look up to and help myself better my best by asking them questions and trying to improve myself. You need great people to help you, think of the concept “standing on the shoulder of giants”. In order to see as far as you can, you need to stand on the shoulders of giants. By finding mentors and people who have or are doing and being where you want to be, you need to ask them questions and find out HOW YOU can do it and be next to them.
The past couple of months I have learned a lot about myself and about what I really want in life as well as some of my passions. Having great mentors to ask those tough questions and help guide you a long a path of your own doing can better your best as well as inspire others.
Go out to various networking events, find people who are doing what you want to be doing and try and talk to them. Think of various ways you can contact IMPORTANT, well know people and how something simple as “putting yourself out there” can help you with this process. While reading the book, “You Call the Shots” by Cameron Johnson you will read about how Cameron wrote a letter to Donal Trump and responded by putting him and his family up in a nice suite at the Plaza as well as some nice goodies and a tour of FAO Schwartz. Too many times people will say, such and such is too busy of a person to do that, or maybe you are wasting your time. Hey, it’s much like the lottery, you need to be in it to win it! So putting yourself out there and taking a chance can help you get where you want to be in life.
Find those mentors that push you and ask the tough questions. Setup times and turn those mentors into business coaches. I know for myself I have recently asked this to help myself grow. I have 1 mentor who set a deadline for me, which I plan on meeting it. Get involved with people try and setup a weekly meeting to ask 2 simple questions, what did you do last week and what are you doing next week. Just talk about it and write down a couple of points/notes. Look back at them at the end of the month and challenge yourself for the next month. Goal setting and actually reaching your goals is hard because it challenges you to set the bar to a level and go and reach that level in a given time frame.
