While working today something was brought to my attention that is pretty scary from a company who’s moto is “Don’t be evil” also know as Google. So while doing searching on blinklist via Google, I was pointed out by a coworker that Google is filtering results in a dare I say … “evil” manner. Take a look at the results listing below

Yes that is a small “This site may harm your computer.” link. I can understand this part and actually thought this might be interesting for searching. It’s the next parts that I start to mind, lets go a bit deeper. So let’s imagine we click on the link “This site my harm your computer”, it takes you to this page below.

Wow, so Google is flagging this link as “Strange behavior and malicious software” and is trying to make the website safe. Okay this is starting to get a bit creepy. I mean honestly, how do they know this, can’t their software be wrong a couple of times? Let’s continue on this search by clicking the link above the “This site may harm your computer”, also know as the result link.

BAM! It’s like you are at a lock down work cube and the “IT” department has flagged this site as porn bad. Okay, but what if I want to continue on, OMG no link, what? Yes that’s right, Google encodes the URL and does NOT link to the site. You can “continue at your own risk” as Google puts it, but you have to copy and past the encoded URL into your browser. I feel like this is policing the web and forcing users to “obey” their command.
But hey, did you notice that nice, Advisory provided by Google? Shouldn’t that make you feel warm inside? Maybe, but with Google now at a record high 67% of the search market this makes me rethink the future of the web. I know Google is trying to protect me, but what about the sites they flag that are false positives. Just think about it the next time your on Google and performing a search.
